The Athenian school offers a distinctive and meaningful ecation in an extraordinary learning environment. In Google Earth, we type the Athenian school address. It’s in northen California, in the San Francisco barrier with easy access to Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco and the surrounding areas with a beautiful campus in the town of Danville. There is the campus and it sits at the foot of mount Diablo. And this is Mount Diablo.
Athenian is both a high school and a middle school. Athenian has excellent teachers and interesting courses often using a hands-on participatory approach. Classes average only 15 students so everyone gets involved and because students and teachers know each other well, learning is enhanced and becomes part of life. Students from a wide variety of backgrounds and origins get a chance to find and be themselves, developing a meaningful vision for their future. The community at Athenian is real. There are day students from throughout the east bay and 40 boarding students from US and a dozen other countries and many teachers live on campus with their families. Transportation to and from school, and financial aid make Athenian possible and accessible.
Athenian is a founding member of Round Square, an international group of schools which offers student exchange, service trips and conferences around the world. Many Athenian students travel internationally, either through Round Square or faculty-led interim trips that broaden a student’s horizon and take students far beyond the classroom at the Athenian campus.
The 11th grade participates in the incredible AWE--- the Athenian Wilderness Experience. AWE is often cited as ‘one of the most positive life-affirming experiences a student can achieve’. AWE is a celebration of the entire Athenian community. Each year, students learn about responsibility and their place in the world through community service, a program which has been nationally recognized. Students dealt upon issues studied in the classroom to make a positive difference in the world through service-learning projects, from urban construction, to child care, to saving the bay project, to helping with pet adoption.
Most students are involved in the extensive arts programs, drawing, painting, sculpture and photography, as well as music, chorus and the performing arts. Amazing hands-on programs involve students actively in their learning, from middle school bocase day where students experience the material they are studying to the on-campus construction of a real airplane, to the excitement of the award-wining robotics. At Athenian, everywhere you turn, you see support of one another, teachers to students, and students helping each other. The entire community is a learning environment.
Domestic and international boarding students at Athenian form a residential community together with teachers and faculty families who live on campus. There are more than 40 Athenian boarding students who come from the US and a dozen other countries, to live, study, learn from each other and prepare for their futures. The boarding program expands the world view and enriches the entire Athenian community.
Everyone takes an active role in many aspects of the school, for instance, a middle school math teacher will also be a guide on an outdoor excursion and also be the middle school flag football coach. Athenian students are encouraged to try out opportunities they might not try under other circumstances in order to discover who they really are.
Town meetings are a part of life at Athenian because the students have a real voice in the governance of the school. The parity association and extended community get things done from the recently completed all-weather sports field to the Eleanor Dase Center for the music program and multi-purpose use to be completed in 2009. The versital Athenian facilities serve many purposes, for instance, the library might have an art show or the latest student video competition, or online research, or study in small groups, or a place to meet friends, or make copies for homework.
Athenian involves students in physical ecation and competitive outlets. With dedicated sports facilities: an on-campus pool, the all-weather sports field and a fantastic gymnasium, the importance of the physical wellbeing of students and the desire and ability to be serious competitors in team-lead sports are not only possible but Athenian has earned a strong name for itself.
