A Story About Friendship...
One day, during my freshman year in high school, I noticed a classmate, Kyle, walking home from school. He appeared to be carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would someone take all their books home on a Friday? He must be a real nerd." I had a busy weekend planned, with parties and a football game the next afternoon, so I continued on my way.
As I walked, I saw a group of kids running towards Kyle. They charged at him, knocking his books to the ground and tripping him until he landed in the dirt. His glasses flew off and landed about ten feet away in the grass. I saw the sadness in his eyes as he looked up. My heart went out to him. I jogged over, helped him pick up his books, and handed him his glasses. "Those guys are jerks. They should get lives," I said. He replied with a big smile, "Hey, thanks!"
Turns out, Kyle lived near me, and I realized I had never seen him before. He said he had attended a private school before. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a really cool guy. I asked if he wanted to play football with me and my friends on Saturday. He said yes. We spent the whole weekend together, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. My friends felt the same way about him.
On Monday morning, there was Kyle again, carrying a stack of books. I teased him, "Dude, you're going to build some serious muscles with these books every day!" He just laughed and gave me half the books. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
As seniors, we started thinking about college. Kyle chose Georgetown, and I was heading to Duke. I knew we would always be friends, that the distance wouldn't matter. He wanted to be a doctor, and I was going on a football scholarship for business. Kyle was the valedictorian of our class. I always teased him about being a nerd. He had to give a speech at graduation. I was glad it wasn't me up there.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great – he really found himself in high school. He filled out and even looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me, and all the girls loved him! Sometimes, I was jealous. That day, he looked nervous about his speech. I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He gave me one of those grateful looks and smiled. "Thanks," he said.
As he began his speech, he cleared his throat and started, "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you through the tough years. Your parents, teachers, siblings, maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I'm here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them." He went on to tell the story of how we met. He had planned to end his life that weekend. He talked about cleaning out his locker for his mom and carrying his stuff home. He looked at me hard and gave a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." The crowd gasped as this popular, good-looking boy shared his weakest moment. I saw his parents looking at me, smiling that same grateful smile. It clicked for me in that moment. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person's life – for better or for worse.
