The Necklace
The girl was one of those pretty and charming young creatures who sometimes are born, as if by an error of fate, into a petty official’s family. She had no dowry(嫁妆), no hopes, not the slightest chance of being appreciated, understood, loved, and married by any rich and distinguished man; so she slipped into marriage with a minor civil servant of the Ministry of Public Instruction.
Unable to afford jewelry, she dressed plainly: but she was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station; since with women there is neither caste nor rank, for beauty, grace and charm take the place of family and birth. Natural ingenuity, instinct for what is elegant, and suppleness(柔软,柔顺)of wit give them their place on the only scale that counts, and often make of women of the people the equals of the very greatest ladies.
Mathilde suffered constantly, feeling that all the attributes of a gracious life, every luxury, should rightly have been hers. The poverty of her rooms—the shabby walls, the worn furniture, the ugly upholstery(室内装潢) --caused her pain. All these things that another woman of her class would not even have noticed, tortured her and made her angry. The very sight of the little Breton peasant girl who did her humble housework aroused in her rueful(悲伤的)thoughts and bewildering dreams
