Not every star in the sky can shine in the starry night. But there always be some that will catch your eyes. Shakespeare, a glint poet who played a leading role in the 17th century, is unquestionable such kind of person.
Poetry describes the poet’s strong feeling, and the beautiful scene written in the poetry often moving us deeply. The poetry can reach the highest level of artistic conception because it let you feel a “yesly” no when you read it.
Shakespeare has a magic pens, his works influence millions of people from 16th century till now, especially the sonnet. He turned his artistic gifts to character by becoming a poet.
The sonnet 29th praises of love fervidly. He just use 14 lines to let we know the changes of his sentiment. He felt mournful at first, from“in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes” we can see his miserable live experience. Happiness has left him even he “cries”, it just “bootless”. The deaf heaven didn’t recognize him. He felt desperation and he “cursed his fate”. The next 4 sentences he told us his inferiority. He envy the rich hope, the feature and the friends possessed of others. He desired art and scope. Compared with so many outstanding men, he found himself an incapable man. See “with, what I most enjoy contented least”. He even negatives the best thing he has done! It really pushed his sadness feeling to the highest point.
But the following 4 sentences change the emotion tune. He thought on “thee” and become exhilarated in a sudden. The depression before has disappear one by one. A delightful feeling extended from sole to head. “Like to the lark at break of day arising/ from, sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate”. Thoughts pass in his mind like flocks of birds in the sky. I can hear the voice of their wings. “Thee” is the embodiment of love! Its love that made him a optimistic man. At last he wrote “for thy sweet love remember red such wealth brings, that then I scorn to change my state with kings”. These two sentences summarized the whole poet and contrast to the beginning. And it is Shakespeare’s style.
The poet’s sentiment changed from passive to positive like the ocean wave. It’s all e to “thee”. Love is the power of his life. He was more likely born for the true love. Shakespeare’s live has become richer by the love. “That then I scorn to change my state with kings” shows us the leitmotiv of the poetry. The “sweet love” stands for the nobly friendship, the faithfulness love and the warm family. He use his poet lead us to a fairyland where the song feels the infinite in the air, the picture in the earth poem in the air and the earth, for its words have meaning that walks and music that soars. He dipped vessel of his heart into that silent hour, it has filled with love.
Look at the structure, he made an adventurous reform. The traditional Italian segmenting is 4 /4/3/3. But Shakespeare used 4/4/4/2. To write in this way, poet can use the last 2 sentences to concentrate the leitmotiv more powerful! As time passed by, this 2 sentences often become an aphorism. His poetry’s rhythm is also different from Petrach or Spenser. Iambic pentameter appears most frequently in his sonnet. The feet sound like“ abab cdcd efef gg”. It’s really easy to remember.
Shakespeare’s poetry sounds forceful even it just contains a few lines. There are much more things in it. His excellent does not come alone, it comes with everything. Let the movement of his life has its rest in its own poet. And let us live as a poet
