Tu Youyou, born on December 30, 1930, is a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist and ecator. She is the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for her discovery of the antimalarial drug artemisinin.
Tu Youyou was born and raised in Ningbo, China. She studied at Peking University Medical School and received a degree in pharmaceutical sciences. She later became a researcher at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where she began her work on traditional Chinese herbal medicine treatments for malaria.
In 1967, Tu Youyou was appointed the head of the Project 523 team, a secret military project to find a cure for malaria. She spent two years researching over 2,000 traditional Chinese herbal remedies and eventually discovered the artemisinin compound, which was highly effective in treating malaria.
Following her discovery, she faced numerous difficulties in getting the drug into proction and distribution. However, her dedication and perseverance paid off, and the drug is today widely used in the treatment of malaria around the world.
Tu Youyou's work has inspired many in the pharmaceutical and medical instries, and she continues to be a leading figure in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. Her Nobel Prize win in 2015 has brought even greater attention to her groundbreaking work in the field of antimalarial medication.
