六一儿童节是全世界儿童的节日。国际民主妇女联合会为保障全世界儿童的权利，于1949年11月在 莫斯科 举行的会议上，决定6月1日为国际儿童节。

从1949年开始，中华人民共和国正式定每年6月1日为国际儿童节。学校一般会为此组织相关的集体活动，并要求学生正式着装香港虽属共和国一部份.

但民间在约定俗成下，香港儿童节的日期与中国台湾的儿童节日期一样，即4月4日。民间庆祝的方式多以送玩具礼物给小朋友，或陪小孩出外吃大餐或游玩。
