要区别这四个单词显然是要区别它们在意思是“组成，构成”的差别。下面用意思相同的一句话的不同用法来说明。

consist是不及物动词，必须和介词连用构成 consist of，例如：The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

compose既是及物动词也是不及物动词，作为 “构成” 的意思的时候是及物动词，而且要用被动语态be composed of, 例如 The United Kingdom is composed of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

constitute 是及物动词，例如 Great Britain and Northern Ireland constitute the United Kindom. 但是constitute一般多用于机构、组织的构成。

comprise是及物动词，当作 “组成、构成" 的意思时候，可以用be comprised of, 等同于be composed of, 例如The United Kingdom is comprised of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
也可以直接coomprise加名词或代词，等同于constitute，例如 Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprise the United Kindom.
