因为seat 是个及物动词，如果你用主动式seating, 那后面就得接宾语
如：
He seated himself at his desk.

如果用be+ 过去分词这个形式，则表“坐着”这个状态，如此句：

i passed a man 【who was seated on the grass.定语从句】
=i passed a man 【 seated on the grass.分词短语做后置定语】
=i passed a man 【 sitting(不及物动词） on the grass.分词短语做后置定语】

因为seat意思“使某人就坐”。在有“使某人...”之意的词，常有这样的用法来表示状态。例如：
I saw a man seated on the chair in the room. 我看到一个人坐在房间的椅子上。
She is seated at the back of the classroom. 她坐在教室后面。再例如：
He is dressed in a black suit.
I found her dressed in white today.
