The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, is one of the traditional Chinese festivals celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, usually falling in February or March according to the Gregorian calendar. This festival dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), when it was already of great significance.
One of the main activities ring the Lantern Festival is watching lanterns. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism flourished in China. It is said that an emperor, hearing that Buddhist monks would watch the sarira, or remains from the cremation of Buddha's body, and light lanterns to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the first lunar month, ordered lanterns to be lit in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha. Over time, this Buddhist rite evolved into a grand festival among the common people, and its influence spread from the Central Plains to the whole of China.
To this day, the Lantern Festival is celebrated annually across the country. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in the streets, attracting numerous visitors. Children hold self-made or purchased lanterns to stroll with on the streets, filled with excitement.
Guessing lantern riddles is an essential part of the festival. Lantern owners write riddles on pieces of paper and hang them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are correct, they receive a small gift. This activity originated ring the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when people enjoyed lanterns. As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social classes.
On the night of the Lantern Festival, people light up thousands of lanterns, and the streets are adorned with colorful lanterns, pushing the New Year celebrations to a new high. Families and friends gather to appreciate the lanterns and the full moon, visit flower markets, guess riddles, and enjoy various performances.
My favorite festival is the Lantern Festival. It is of great importance to the Chinese people and falls on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year. We often eat yuanxiao or tangyuan, go out to enjoy the moon, and watch lanterns on this day. I enjoy watching lanterns and guessing lantern riddles. In the evening, people light up the lanterns, and we can see various shapes and colors of lanterns. Some people write riddles on the lanterns. If we know the answer, we can take the lantern to its owner. If the answer is correct, there is a gift for the winner. I love this festival because it is very interesting.
