The Catcher in the Rye is a full-length novel wrote by Salinger J.D who has published several short stories, but for long piece of fiction, he only published one which is no other than The Catcher in the Rye. Though the book is not long, it has a large influence on American society and the literature world. Once the book was published, it was highly popular with American teenagers in that they thought this book told out their inner thinking and it immediately became a hot fashion for students of both middle and high schools to follow the hero of the book---Holden. They wore reversible and red hunting hats with the peaks pulled around to the back and they spoke Holden-style language. More over, in the 60s, once American scholars discussed literature with American teenagers, in was impossible for them not to mention The Catcher in the Rye. The book is so influential not only because the author created a novel writing style---narrating in the first person to give an account of the book and speaking in a teenager’s voice. More importantly, the author applied idealism which vividly depicted a bored, oscillated spiritual world of a middle-class boy and revealed the substance of the spiritual civilization of the capitalistic society.
The protagonist in the novel The Catcher in the Rye is called Holden Caulfield who is born in a wealthy middle-class family. He is only 16 years old but taller than most boys of his age. He always wears reversible and a red hunting hat with the peak pulled around to the back，hangs around and hates study. Holden’s story begins on a Saturday following the end of classes at the Pencey prep school in Agerstown, Pennslyvania. Pencey is Holden’s forth school. He has been expelled from school for three times. This time, at Pencey prep school , he has failed four out of five of his classes and he received notice that he is being expelled, but he doesn’t feel sad at all and he is not scheled to return home to Manhattan until Wednesday either. After a fight with his roommate, Holden decides that he’s had enough of Pencey and will go to Manhattan three days early, stay in a hotel, and not tell his parents that he is back. He brings with him his luggage leaving for New York. In New York, he sees several abnormal, superficial persons and experiences some terrible things, which make him fell really depressed and troubled. At Sunday’s night, he is drunk, nks his head right up to the ears in one of the washbowls with cold water. Believing he is going to catch pneumonia and die, Holden decides to go to home to see his sister Phoebe. He then sneaks into his own apartment building and wakes his sister, Phoebe. He is forced to admit that he was kicked out of school, which makes her angry at him. He tells her his fantasy of being a catcher in the rye, a person who catches little children as they are about to fall out of a cliff. Later, his parents come back; he hides in the closet and doesn’t come out until they go to their living room. Holden calls his former English teacher, Mr. Antolini, who tells Holden he can come to his apartment. Mr.Antolini asks Holden about his expulsion and tries to counsel him about his future. Holden can’t hide his sleepiness, and Mr.Antolini puts him to bed on the couch. Holden wakes up with a start finding Mr.Antolini stroking his forehead. Thinking Mr.Antolini is making a homosexual overture; Holden hastily excuses himself escaping from there. He sleeps for a few hours on a bench at Grand Central Station.
He decides he’d never go home again and he’d never go to another school again. He wants to hitchhike his way to the west. Before his leaving, he’d like to see Phoebe again. He goes to Phoebe’s school and sends her a note saying that he is leaving home for good and she should meet him at lunchtime at the museum. When Phoebe arrives, she is carrying a suitcase full of clothes, and asks Holden to take her with him. He refuses angrily; she cries and refuses to speak to him. Failing to persuade Phoebe to give up her idea, Holden has to abandon his plan to the west. Knowing she will follow him, he walks to the zoo, and takes her across the park to a carousel. He buys her a ticket and watches her ride it. It starts to rain heavily, but Holden is so happy to see his sister ride the carousel that tears are welling up from his eyes. That is end of the story and the story is narrated by Holden himself.
In the novel, many obvious signs show that Holden is a bad boy, he dislikes study, he smokes and drinks heavily, and he even asks prostitute, we may not understand Holden-style teenagers and many alts tend to treat these kids with simple, rude attitudes which will worsen the problem and deepen the gap between two generations. In fact, Holden’s character is very complex, on the one hand, he himself has many problems, he criticizes people around him, but at times displays as much phoniness, meanness and superficiality as anyone else in the book. On the other hand, his spiritual world is innocent, he hates all phony things while seeks sincerity and love and he himself is a person full of love. He loves children, because children are pure and innocent. He wants to be a catcher in the rye to protect those playing children from falling into the cliff referring to the alt world which he associates with hypocrisy and ugliness. He doesn’t want children to step into the alt world; he wants them to stay innocent forever. That is why when he sees the word “* you” on the wall of phoebe’s school he is so angry that he even wants to kill the guy who wrote it. His degeneration is in essence a kind of resistance, because he doesn’t want to wallow in mire with those guys he despises.
However, children will grow up one day and ring this process, there’s no doubt that children will become mature and lose innocence. It is a nature rule, no one can change it. That is why when Holden comes to realize that he can’t keep the innocence stay, he feels so depressed and angry, and he can’t change the alt world by his might himself. Therefore, Holden’s pursuit of innocence and pure finally drives him to the psychiatric hospital.
