孔子闲居，子贡侍坐，请问为人下之道奈何。孔子曰：“善哉！尔之问也。为人下，其犹土乎！”子贡未达，孔子曰：“夫土者，据之得甘泉焉，树之得五谷焉，草木植焉，鸟兽鱼鳖遂焉，生则立焉，死则入焉，多功不言，赏世不绝。故曰：能为人下者，其惟土乎？”子贡曰：“赐虽不敏，请事斯语。”

译文
孔子在家闲坐，他的学生子贡陪侍在旁，请教孔子应该如何做到谦虚谨慎地待人。孔子说：“你的问题问得好呀！对人谦虚有礼，大概就像大地那样吧！”子贡不明白孔子的意思。孔子又说：“那大地，挖掘它就可以得到甘泉，耕耘它就会得到五谷；草木在它上边生长，鸟兽鱼鳖在其中各得其所。人活着就在上面成家立业，死后就埋入地里。大地的功劳很多却从不会四处张扬，然而它对社会的贡献却永不断绝。所以说，真正能谦虚待人的，大概只有大地了吧？”子贡说：“我虽然不聪明，也一定要按您这话去做。”
