因为睡美人版本众多，以下仅叙述夏尔·佩罗版本和格林兄弟版本的内容。
睡美人是一个王后所诞下的孩子。王后非常高兴，邀请了人类和仙子族的各方好友前来盛宴。却没有邀请*的女巫卡拉波斯。此事被心怀嫉妒和忿恨的女巫知悉，便不请自来，以“公主会被纺织机的纺缍刺破手指而丧命”的诅咒作为礼物。幸而紫丁香仙子未献上祝福，她把女巫的毒咒缓解，使公主不会死掉。但公主仍会沉睡，直至有一个真心爱慕公主的人前来献上亲吻，公主才会醒过来。
