The causes of Tess’s tragedy can be explored from three aspects: social factors; environmental factors and Tess’s personal character. (1) the social factors: one social factor is the poverty of her family; another social factor is the double moral standards for man and woman at that time. The double moral standard for man and woman drives her to make one mistake after another. (2) the environmental factors: in the family environment, Tess’s ignorant parents contributed to her tragedy; in the social environment, it is the society and the evil and selfish male chauvinism that should be responsible for her crime. (3) The third factor is Tess’s personal characters. She has the al nature of the social character: compromise and resistance. Her fate was doomed to tragedy.
