The concept of theme and rheme was first proposed by V. Mathesius, who was the initiator of the prague school. The school of system function, which was represented by British liguist Halliday, made pioneering contributions. Halliday believed that the structure of information and that of the theme and rheme should be seperated. Danes held the view that the information structure of the discouse was determined by the sequence of the theme and rheme. These two viewpoints provided the theoretical basis for further dividing the thematic progression mode. In most cases, theme represents the known information while rheme shows the new one. Understanding more about the mode of thematic progression, the authors can have a better construction of the discourse. Therefore, the thematic progression theory is of great significance in the development of the teaching work in English writing and reading.
