defeat多指击败 “敌军”和“入侵者”； beat 强调连续或反复地“打”,因此像心脏跳动、打鼓、打拍子等之类具有连续性或反复性的动作,一般要用 beat.如：
My heart beats fast.我的心跳得很快.
Who is beating the drum?谁在击鼓?
She was beating the st out of the carpet.她在敲打地毯上的灰尘(以敲打的方式除尘).
beat和defeat属一组同义词,它们的宾语必须是人或一个集体,如a team,a class,an school,an army.defeat尤指在战场上打败敌人；beat是游戏、比赛的专门用词.二者常可换.eg:
