Liu Xiang's dream of defending his Olympic title on home soil ended on Monday when he failed to start his first-round heat in the 110 metres hurdles.
Liu， the world champion and the host nation's best hope of an athletics gold medal at the Beijing Olympics， pulled up after a false start and hobbled down the tunnel to leave the Bird's Nest stadium in stunned silence.

Liu Xiang, a Shanghai native, was born on July 13, 1983. His height is 188cm , weight 74kg . Singing and the computer are his hobbies. In March, 1999, he entered the Shanghai track and field team and one year later, he was admitted to the National Youth Team. Sun Haiping has been training him.
In 2002, he won the gold modals in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Asian Games and the Asian Championships. The next year, he took third in the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships in England . At the Athens Olympic Games on August 27, 2004. Liu won the men’s 110m hurdles final in 12.91 seconds, equaling the world record set and breaking the Olympic record.

He is expected to deliver China's only gold-medal in the track and field event in the coming Beijing Olympics. He won at the Athens Games four years ago, and held the 110m hurdles record until Cuban athlete Dayron Robles broke that record by 0.01 seconds. The only thing they are stingy with is to give the kids a break - mentally.
Many in China do not seem to realize that pressure in the form of pep talks work to only a certain extent and for certain people. Beyond that, adverse effects start to kick in. Kids are by nature rebellious, and too much pressure will only intensify their defiance.
Do not turn Liu into another loser. Do not make the terrible mistake of pressuring him till he buckles. Cheer him if he wins; comfort him if he loses. Whatever the result, he is our pride.
Liu xiang, although you have lost, in my opinion, you are always best!
