植树节是以宣传森林效益，并动员群众积极参加以植树造林为活动内容的节日。

中国的植树节最初由凌道扬和韩安、裴义理等林学家于1915年倡议设立。当时的林学家们有感于国家林业不振，“重山复岭，濯濯不毛”，于是上书农商部长，倡导以每年清明节为“中国植树节”。

1915年7月，在孙中山的倡议下，当时的北洋政府正式下令，规定了以每年清明节为植树节，举行植树典礼并举办植树活动，自此，中国有了植树节。

1925年3月12日，孙中山先生逝世。1928年，国民政府为纪念孙中山逝世三周年，举行了植树式。后来为了纪念孙中山先生，把他逝世的那天，即3月12日定为植树节。

1979年2月，在邓小平提议下，第五届全国人大常委会第六次会议正式通过了将每年的3月12日定为中国植树节的决议。
