您好，and 后面的这个逗号是需要，因为这个逗号不是跟着 and 而是跟着后面的 with the bag in their possession。也就是后面是一个短语（with the bag in their possession），前后都用了逗号作为区别。之所以这么做是因为这一句很长，主干其实是一个并列句：
the strap broke and both men started running through the trees 然后插入两个短语，第一个是 in the struggle 后接一个逗号，另一个是 with the bag in their possession 前后都接了一个逗号，作为区别使用的。
