在迪金森生活的年代,安默斯特镇年轻人的死亡率很高,家家户户经常有殡葬的事情发生。她家果园靠近公墓,而她家门口是送殡人群必经之处。
但是,对她影响至深的应该说是她那些夭逝的青年朋友,例如索菲娅·赫连德、伦纳德·汉弗莱和本杰明·牛顿。 其中本杰明·牛顿是迪金森走入文学道路的导师和挚友噢~ 他在婚后不久死于肺病,她为他那灵魂的处境和未来感到忧心忡忡。为此,迪金森早期的诗中 就不难发现这种亲朋好友之死给她造成的巨大伤痛。
死别的痛苦和死亡的威胁过早的盘踞了她的心灵,而对人生的意义和死亡的真谛非寻常地开始关心起来,写下了关于五六百首已死亡为题材的诗。
在这些诗中,有的是表达“死的*”的(Death wishes),有的是观察死亡过程的(The act of dying),有的是想象一次送葬仪式的(A funeral),有的则是预言在灵柩和坟墓中的生活(Existence in the casket and grave)。
提起了死亡主题的诗歌,那么同时可以关注到她对于“永生”的理解。她对永生始终抱着一种矛盾心理,时而相信,时而怀疑。但她确实有几首诗是说明人死后而进入了永生境界的。
迪金森的诗歌从身体、心理和感情诸方面对死亡的本质进行了研究。她从生者和死者两个角度来描写了死亡,而且对自己的死亡、个人躯体的丧失和她的灵魂去天国的旅程都进行了大胆的想象和预测。她还把死人拟人化,使它变成为一个强有力的复杂的人物形象。
另外,死亡和永生是与宗教密切联系在一起的,因此从某种意义上说,迪金森是一位宗教诗人。
