首先你的句子用的是一般过去式，但是没有明显的表示过去时间的状语，感觉有点怪……
My father,a salesman,was on the road all week.When he came home on the weekend，we had a great time playing football in the house.
或者用个倒装
My father,a salesman,was on the road all week.Only when he came home on the weekend， could we have a great time playing football in the house.
on the weekend表示在周末，你用for the weekend表达过周末应该也是对的
