卡麦隆把提琴手从演奏晚会音乐转变成圣诗的过程处理得非常好，当船身倾斜到提琴手们不太能保持平衡的时候——也就是虚构的男女主角往船尾攀爬的时候，哈特利对其他的提琴手鞠了一个躬，说：“今晚我有很大的荣幸与你们一同演奏，现在，让我们各去各的吧！”然而，就在他手下的提琴手转身的时候，他站在原处，似乎在想“我没处可去，只有等待与主相会了。”于是，他又拿起琴炫，从容地奏着那最能让他预备见主面之心的歌，《更近我主(Near my God to Thee)》。听到那天韵的升起，那几个他刚刚告别过的提琴手也转过身来，加入了他那最后的一首演奏曲：Nearer my god to thee

这首诗歌的作者莎拉女士(Sarah Flower Adams,1805-1848) 她的父亲Benjamin Flower是一位很优秀并勇敢的记者,当年因写了几篇*文章而入狱,有许多支持者都到狱中去探望,因此认识了她母亲,出狱后两人便结婚,并且生下了姊姊(Eliza)与她,可惜母亲结婚仅十年便过世,两位幼女在父亲的养育下,后来都相当有成就,巧合的是他们两人竟然都只活了四十三岁。
莎拉於二十九岁那年,嫁给了一位工程师,由於她是位身材高挑的美女,又喜欢音乐,更期望藉戏剧反映人生,并达到宗教目的,因此便热爱於舞台上的演出,而丈夫也相当支持她的决定,所以曾成功的主演过歌剧"马克白夫人",可惜后来她因体弱多病,不得不放下舞台而转向文学创作去发展。
这首"与主更亲近"之创作灵感,主要是根据创世记中,雅各为逃避以扫的愤怒,离乡而来到荒僻的旷野。到了晚上,他以石为枕在那里躺卧,并且梦见天梯....,於是体验到亲近主的宝贵而写下了这首诗,发表於1840年,当时还未受到肯定,直到1856年,作曲家孟逊博士为它谱曲之后,才广受大家肯定及喜爱。
通常大家喜欢将这首诗歌用於追思礼拜,乃是由於1901年9月美国大总统麦根莱(W. Mckinley)遇刺身亡,由於生前喜欢这首歌,於是全国为他举行追悼会时,都选唱这首歌,而广被效尤。另外於1913年4月10日,号称永不沈没的最大邮轮"铁达尼号"(Titanic), 因触礁还是沈没了,一千馀人在最后葬身前,仍在乐队伴奏下壮烈的唱出这首歌乃最为感人。
