metal 在强调金属的种类的时候，他是可数名词
如： Various metals are used to make the parts of this machine. 这部机器的零件是用多种金属制造的

强调金属材料的时候是不可数名词
如：There isn't much metal in the bodywork of this new car; it's mainly plastic. 这辆新汽车的车身没用多少金属材料, 大部分是塑料的
另外：
metals ： railway-lines 钢轨; 铁轨
如： These locomotives ran on Great Western Railway metals until 1940. 这些火车头在1940年以前一直在大西部铁路线上运行.
