The Dragon Boat Festival,also called Double Fifth Festival,is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar.This festival is to commemorate the death of QU Yuan,an upright and honest poet and statesman who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.

The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat races. It symbolizes people‘s attempts to rescue Qu Yuan. In the current period, these races also demonstrate the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.Besides,the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice).

Zong zi is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. People who mourned the death of Qu threw Zong zi into the river to feed his ghost every year.

With the changes of the times,the memorial turns to be a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of year. People will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house.

（2）纪念吴国大将伍子胥:相传春秋时期,楚国人伍子胥带领吴军杀入楚国首都,将已死去的楚平王鞭尸三百,报杀父杀兄之仇。后馭带领吴军灭越国,越国国王勾践将自身作为人质押在吴国，伍子胥劝谏吴王夫差杀勾践,夫差不听。后夫差听信太宰伯齬谗言, 派人送一把宝剑给伍子胥,其自杀。伍子胥死前对邻舍人说:“我死后,将我眼睛挖出悬挂在吴京之东门上,以看越国军队入城灭吴。”吴王夫差听后大怒，令人在五月五日将伍子胥的尸体沉于钱塘江中。当地百姓为了纪念他,便在这一天包粽子、赛龙舟。

（3）纪念孝女曹娥:相传东汉上虞人,曹娥的父亲溺于江中,曹娥寻找多日后,仍未找到其父，于是在五月五日的那一天, 14岁的曹娥投江寻父，几天后,曹娥抱着父亲的尸体走出江。后人为了纪念曹娥的孝道,于是便将每年的五月五日作为节日纪念曹娥。
