一. 指物时的that和which
下列场合通常只用that
1. 当先行词被序数词或形容词最高级修饰时
e.g. : the first lesson that they learn is the most difficult of all .
this is the most interesting book that i’ve ever read .
2. 当先行词是all , anything , nothing , everything , none , much , little , few , the one等不定代词时
e.g. : he did everything that he could to save the patient .
i mean the one that was bought yesterday .
there’s nothing in the world that can frighten him .
all that i want is peace and quiet .
3. 当先行词被all , any , every , no , only , very , last , next , one of等词所修饰时
e.g. : this is the very book that i’m interested in .
the only thing that we could do was to wait .
you can take any seat that is free .
this is one of the presents that my parents gave me on my birthday .
4. 当先行词既指人又指物时
e.g. : look at the girl and her dog that are crossing the street .
the writer and his novel that you’ve just talked about is really well known .
5. 以which开头的疑问句中
e.g. : which is the car that killed the old lady ?
6. 被修饰的成分为表语或关系代词在定语从句中作表语时
e.g. : china isn’t the country that it used to be .
that’s a good book that will help you a lot .
而下列场合通常只用which :
1. 当先行词本身是that且指物时
e.g. : i’ve found that which i was looking for .
the clock is that which tells the time .
2. 引导非*性定语从句时
e.g. : more and more people are beginning to learn english , which is becoming very popular in our country .
3. 关系代词作介词宾语时
e.g. : this is the room in which i was born .
a zoo is a park in which many kinds of animals are kept for exhibition .

二. 指人时的who和that
下列场合通常只用who：
1. 先词词是one , ones , anyone , those等时
e.g. : those who didn’t hand in your papers please stand up .
anyone who leaves the room last should turn off the lights .
2. 当先行词是人且有较长的修饰语时
e.g. : he was the only person in his office who was invited to the party .
i met a foreigner in the park in the street yesterday who could speak chinese very well .
3. 当先行词是he , i , you , they等时（多用于谚语中）
e.g. : he who doesn’t reach the great wall isn’t a true man .
he who laughs last laughs best .
4. there be句型结构中
e.g. : there’s a man who wants to see you .
there are still some students who haven’t handed in their homework .
而下列情况通常用that：
1. 关系代词在定语从句中作表语时
e.g. : he isn’t the naughty boy that he was several years ago .
2. 先行词是疑问代词who时
e.g. : who that knows him would trust him ?

因为从句修饰的是一个人，所以要用who，不能用that。

一般来说，that可以指代人，但感觉总不如who正式，旧象汉语里管人叫“东西”一样。

从What到The Great Wall 是一个修饰He的定语从句作后面is not a true man的主语 ，删除后可以看成是He is not a true man .OK？

这是定语从句.

从句修饰的是人用who, 修饰物用that.

下面我造两个句子来说明:

比如: the book that on the table is the one that i have been looking for.
(卓上的那本书就是我一直寻找的书)

这个句子中我用了两个that来进一步说名that指物.

He who knows the way of using "that" correctly is the right person i have been looking for to help me with my English.
(知道如何正确使用"that"的人就是我一直寻找的可以帮助我学习英语的人)

这里我用了"who" 来说明"who"指人.
