首先, more ... ... than ... ... 的确是个比较级句子结构. 翻译者在这里实际上把翻译的技巧和英文的语法混为一谈. 结果他那个翻译漏掉了一个很重要的英文 "hear". 所以他的翻译不是小说作者的原意. 要理解这一点, 必须把原著的整个句子写出来:
"But whether she were violently set against the match, or violently delighted with it, it was certain that her manner would be equally ill adapted to do credit to her sense; and she could no more bear that Mr. Darcy should hear the first raptures of her joy than the first vehemence of her disapprobation."
我先把这个句子简化一下, 以便于理解作者的原意: (注意括弧中是我改写的部分; 句子的后半部是一个省略句): "But whether she were ... against the match, or ... delighted with it, it was certain that her manner would (not be better than) her sense; and she could bear no more (the thought) that whether Darcy should hear the first raptures of her joy or (hear) the first vehemence of her disapprobation.
作者的原意翻成中文: "可是无论她对这个婚姻持强烈反对, 或者是高兴的不得了, 她待人的态度肯定不比她的理智要好; 不管是Darcy先听到她的欣喜若狂呢, 还是先听到她的激烈反对, 伊丽莎白都受不了".
