Probably the most common engineering facilities damaged by groundwater are pavements. It has been stated that groundwater in pavements accelerates the damage rates by hundreds of times over the damage rates of pavements with no groundwater. This premature failure of thousands of miles of pavements and billions of dollars in losses a year could be avoided by good pavement drainage practices. The key element in a good drainage system is a layer of highly permeable material ( such as open-graded gravel) protected by filters or geofabric so that the permeable material will not become clogged by the intrusion of soil fines. A drainage system,to remove the water from the base,is also required.
There are several ways that groundwater can enter the base material. In areas having a high groundwater table or artesian conditions,water can be forced upward into the base material. Water can also flowdownward through pavement cracks or joints. There can also be the development of a perched groundwater condition,where water moves laterally through the base from adjacent planter areas,medians,or shoulders.
One construction method to prevent the flowof groundwater through utility trenches is to use a grout ( such as a cement slurry ) in the utility line or storm drain bedding zone. The remainder of the trench could then be backfilled and compacted with on-site native soil.
This should provide the trench with a permeability equal to or less than the surrounding native soil.
